×Bringing an AI health assistant
to AYUMETRIX
A diagnostics lab makes its results understandable — and turns it into a reason partners want to sign on.
Accurate results that patients couldn't always read
AYUMETRIX is a diagnostics laboratory that serves clinics, partners, and their patients through NOVA, its multi-tenant SaaS platform. Like many laboratories, AYUMETRIX encountered a common challenge: while the test results were accurate and clinically valuable, they were often difficult for patients to fully understand.
Traditional laboratory reports filled with reference ranges, technical terminology, and abbreviations frequently led to follow-up questions and requests for clarification. Laboratory staff spent significant time helping patients interpret their results — important, valuable conversations, but a largely manual process that was difficult to scale efficiently as testing volumes grew.
The platform underneath had its own problems. Tenant isolation lived in scattered checks rather than being enforced anywhere, there was no real observability into what was happening per request, the HIPAA posture had gaps, and onboarding a new partner was a manual, multi-personnel effort that stretched into months — with almost no documentation to lean on.
An AI health assistant, inside the HIPAA boundary
We built an AI health assistant on Anthropic Claude, running through AWS Bedrock inside NOVA's HIPAA boundary. It reads a patient's results, explains them in plain language, and answers follow-up questions in a conversational format. All personal health data is de-identified and passes through a HIPAA-compliant process. The same foundation was then extended across the product.
AI health assistant
Summarizes lab results and answers patient questions in plain language. Summaries and recommendations are saved against each result for a full, auditable record.
Personalized wellness report
A wellness score and short narrative with recommendations, generated through a single de-identified Bedrock call and rendered into the patient’s report.
Public FAQ assistant on ayumetrix.com
Handles the routine questions — hours, turnaround, how to read a panel — that used to go straight to the lab team.
Production-grade re-platform
Tenant isolation enforced at the database, a single validated API, full request tracing, idempotent writes, and config-driven partner branding instead of a separate code fork per client — plus the architecture documentation that never existed before.
From a support cost to a commercial asset
The most immediate shift was significant: the frequency of questions from customers and patients dropped. Patients now get an instant, readable explanation of their results instead of waiting on a callback — and the more interesting result was commercial. The assistant became something AYUMETRIX could commercialize.
Fewer queries reaching the lab
Once the FAQ assistant went live, routine queries into the lab dropped and staff got back the hours that went to repeat explanations.
A new partner won and onboarded
AYUMETRIX brought a new clinical partner, Lyfecheck, onto NOVA on the strength of the AI-enabled portal.
Inbound demand and a platform-wide rollout
Other current partners of AYUMETRIX have asked for the same integration, and the portal is now opening to every partner on the platform, one at a time.
Onboarding: months to minutes
Since customization is now configuration rather than code, partner setup that once took months takes minutes — the only reason a full rollout is feasible.
HIPAA and observability where there were none
The platform now has a HIPAA-aligned footing, a full audit trail, and end-to-end tracing, with documentation behind it for the next engineer or partner.
